Big Sioux Saddlery is dedicated to producing quality custom leather goods, specializing in products for the discriminating horseman. We create one-of-a-kind products that will be treasured by generations to come, using only the best raw materials, combined with excellence in craftsmanship borne of over two decades of experience.
Beginning with detailed information about the rider, the horses he/she rides, and their riding activities, we strive to produce the quality and individualism so lacking in today’s market. We may ask for certain measurements of either horse or rider, and the customer has the final word on the type of leather, tree, hardware and accessories. We will not build a saddle we deem to be unsafe for horse or rider, and that is where our twenty-plus years of experience in leatherwork as well as training horses is to your advantage. A satisfied customer is our goal, from the arena competitor, to the weekend trail rider, to the full time horse trainer.
From Draft Show harness to a buggy harness for driving down the road on a Sunday afternoon, Big Sioux Saddlery can build it to suit your needs. Brass, chrome, or stainless steel hardware, spots or fancy ornaments, patent or contrasting leather inlays or overlays; the sky is virtually the limit. Or maybe you just want a basic, well-constructed harness for everyday driving. Fancy or plain, the same care and quality go into every product leaving our shop.
Tack & More
Big Sioux Saddlery is your Number-One source for that good, hard-to-find “using tack”, made from Grade A Hermann Oak russet harness leather. Our breastcollars, headstalls, and reins have long been in demand by horsemen who insist on the best. We also create custom training equipment, personalized tack, and gift items such as wallets, day planners, and leather picture frames for that winning photograph! This is only a brief overview of what we produce. We are constantly working to develop new ideas to meet the needs of our customers.
Holiday Tree Ornaments
The items shown at left make great stocking stuffers. Or decorate an entire tree with a western or lodge theme. Five shapes are currently available: moose, boot, bell, star and bear. Each is available in several leather finishes. Other shapes are available by special order. Quantity discounts – contact us for further details.
Big Sioux Saddlery offers a complete range of saddle, tack, and harness repairs. Whether it’s new sheepskin on your saddle, or putting the pieces back together after a runaway, you can be confident that you get the same excellence in workmanship and materials that we use with our custom goods.
Quality repair work does not just happen: It takes years of working with leather and an extensive knowledge of horse equipment. Over twenty years of doing leather work provides us with a thorough understanding of this versatile natural material. Our experience in training saddle and harness horses gives us the background so important in knowing which parts are high stress areas and which are merely cosmetic. At Big Sioux Saddlery, we put that experience and knowledge to work for you.
Experience is needed to know what type of leather to use. There are many different tannages and finishes of leather, all intended for a particular purpose. We stock a wide variety of leather so we are able to use the correct type for each repair. Using a certain type or finish of leather incorrectly can significantly shorten the life of the article.
We will never compromise quality and safety for economy. It is imperative that the correct area of the hide itself be used for each application. There are strong, weak, stretchy, firm, solid, and fibrous areas within every hide. To use the wrong cut for the job may be more costly than necessary, or more importantly, be a compromise of safety.
At Big Sioux Saddlery, quality and value are important, but we also pride ourselves in our integrity. We try our best with each and every customer to give an accurate estimate of the work to be done. If it appears the cost of the repair will exceed the value of the item, then that’s what we tell the customer. It may cost us a job, but we believe the business that operates with integrity is the one customers will return to.
